Overland Safari 1 – The Overland Truck described…

Our first Overland Safari started on Monday 24th January with a company called Absolute Africa. We would spend the next 32 days travelling through Kenya, Uganda, Rwanda and Tanzania on this camping tour.

Our initial group consisted of 5 Aussies, 1 Kiwi, 4 Poms, 2 Austrians and 2 Irish plus our Aussie Tour Guide, Damien and our Kenyan driver, Dixon. Along the way we would collect more travelers and say goodbye to others

As with most Overland Tours, this one was a participatory tour which means that everyone is expected to pitch in and help out with shopping, cooking, cleaning and the security of all our belongings. Everyone is placed in a group and your task changes each day except for one lucky guy who gets the task of Firestarter each and everyday……

The Overland Truck was large and quite spacious. All passengers can place there large packs in the main truck compartments and on board are smaller lockers to secure important personal belongings.

With iPod facilities and power we were entertained by our resident DJ Dave and on the tables provided there was always a game of cards or travel scrabble in play which made our long drive days go much quicker.

Camping through in Eastern Africa was surprisingly comfortable. Tents and Mats are provided, so all you need to supply is pillows and sleeping bags and sheets. 99% of the campsites we stayed in had showers, flush toilets and running water. Most of them also had a bar/ restaurant and sometimes a swimming pool. Quite a few were the place we would book our optional activities such as rafting, horse riding, boat cruises etc….

So that is the overview of an overland safari with Absolute Africa. We have broken up our next few posts by each country that we travelled through and plenty of stories. Enjoy…..

P.S. In time we will have video footage to showcase the Overland Safari Truck
